Bus Service Changes from 14 January 2018

published :Monday, December 04 2017

There will be changes to a number of Brighton & Hove bus routes from the start of our Spring timetable on 14 January 2018.  Once again, a number of these are the result of suggestions made by our passengers and drivers, as well as Brighton Area Buswatch.

Full timetables are now available online at www.buses.co.uk/bustimes and will be in the new Bus Times book out in early January.

We are always pleased to receive suggestions for improvements but as timetables have to be finalised some time in advance we would need to receive these by the end of May to be considered for the September Bus Times book.  Please contact us by email at info@buses.co.uk or write to us at 43 Conway Street, Hove, BN3 3LT.

1, 1A

The weekday evening frequency is increased from every 15 to every 12 minutes on Mondays to Saturdays.

There is an extra morning journey from Whitehawk to Mile Oak on Mondays to Fridays, and also a further extra journey on schooldays from Hove Street to Mile Oak to help pupils at Kings School where some buses are very busy.

2

There is a slightly reduced frequency from Steyning in the early morning on Mondays to Fridays and towards Steyning in the early evening on Mondays to Saturdays due to low numbers of people travelling.

The last journey from Shoreham on Sunday evenings will terminate at South Woodingdean instead of Rottingdean.

5B

There is an additional late evening journey at 12.07am from Hangleton to Hollingbury Asda on Mondays to Saturdays.

6

Certain morning journeys are extended beyond Brighton Station to BHASVIC on schooldays, to provide a new direct link from central Hove and Brighton to BHASVIC.

7

The Sunday daytime frequency is increased from every 10 to every 8 minutes.

12

The early morning journey from Seaford to Brighton at 4.26am will start four minutes earlier at 4.22am and operate via the Meridian Centre in Peacehaven.  It will run to and from the Meridian Centre direct via Sutton Avenue, providing better access for people living in Peacehaven.

14, 14C

On Sunday mornings the 8.13am from Newhaven to Brighton Station will start at Peacehaven at 8.28am, and the 9.15am from Brighton to Peacehaven will no longer run.

21, 21A

There is a change to the route in the Whitehawk area.  Alternate journeys will operate from Manor Hill direct to Brighton Marina, instead of going via Swanborough Drive and Wilson Avenue.  Buses running direct will be numbered 21, and those running via Swanborough Drive will be numbered 21A.

On Saturdays the section of route between the city centre and Goldstone Valley is reduced to hourly, due to low numbers of people travelling.

24

The first journey from Coldean on Saturdays at 5.31am is withdrawn due to very low passenger numbers.  It will continue to run on Mondays to Fridays.

27

There will be extra time for buses to complete their journeys on Sunday evenings to improve reliability.

28, 29

Minor timing changes on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  On Sundays, buses will no longer serve East Hoathly due to very low passenger numbers.

46

There will be a slightly reduced frequency between Portslade and Southwick in the early evening on Mondays to Saturdays.  Also, the first journey from Southwick to Hollingbury on Saturday mornings withdrawn due to very low passenger numbers.

48

On Saturdays only buses will operate every 20 minutes between Lower Bevendean and Churchill Square (Imperial Arcade), instead of going to Brighton Station. This is due to very few people travelling to and from Brighton Station on Saturdays.

There will be no change on Mondays to Fridays when buses will continue to serve Brighton Station.

50

There will be a slight reduction in frequency on Saturday mornings due to low passenger numbers.  The section of route between Hollingdean and the Universities is withdrawn on Saturdays, so all buses will operate as 50 (not 50U) on Saturdays.

There will be no change on Mondays to Fridays.

55

The last two morning journeys from Mile Oak will terminate at Imperial Arcade instead of North Street. Afternoon journey withdrawn.

59

The journey at 7.06am from Steyning will start instead from Old Shoreham, Red Lion, at 7.22am.  A connection is available at Old Shoreham with the service 2 departure at 6.56am from Steyning.

60

The first morning journey to Brighton will terminate at Brighton Station instead of Old Steine.

84

First morning journey from Whitehawk to Sussex University at 7.03am is withdrawn due to very low numbers of passengers travelling.  The second morning journey at 8.22am from Woodingdean will run ten minutes earlier at 8.12am to tie in better with the start time of Brighton Academy (BACA).

The afternoon journey will terminate in Woodingdean (bottom of Cowley Drive) rather than Rottingdean.

N1

This night bus route is revised to operate between Brighton Station and Downs Park via Mile Oak, half hourly on Monday to Saturday nights and hourly on Sunday nights. This will provide a new night bus link every half hour between Brighton Station and central Hove and Portslade.

The section of route between the city centre and Whitehawk will no longer run, due to very few people travelling.  Alternative buses are available between the city centre and Kemp Town on night bus N7.

N5

This night bus route is revised to operate hourly between Old Steine and Hangleton only.

The section of route between the city centre and Patcham and Hollingbury will no longer run, due to very few people travelling.  However, the first N5 journey to Hollingbury is replaced by a new 5B journey at about the same time, leaving the city centre at 12.32am, and frequent night bus N25 operates very close to Hollingbury Asda.

N7

The frequency of this night bus route is reduced to hourly on Monday to Saturday nights after about 2am, when the buses are much quieter.  There is no change on Sunday nights.

N12

This night bus route will N12 will only operate on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, due to very low numbers of people travelling on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights.  There are no changes to the actual timings, except it will terminate at Eastbourne Pier instead of continuing to Hampden Park Station.

Route N14 will continue unchanged, operating every night except Sundays.

Old Steine bus stops

As an experiment, buses on routes 7, N7, 14C, 18, 22, 48, 78 and 79 will no longer serve Old Steine stop H (near St James’s Street). They will continue to serve stop U at Old Steine.

This is to ease congestion at Old Steine stop H due to the high number of buses using it, with buses being unable to pass the one in front, and being often caught by the traffic lights.  We hope that it will improve the punctuality of all routes using Old Steine.

This is an experiment and will be kept under review in the light of customer feedback and operational experience.
