Brighton Half Marathon

The Brighton Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 26 February, starting at 9am from Madeira Drive, heading up the A23 to St Peter’s Church, then turning round and heading south back down to the Aquarium roundabout before heading along the A259 to the east of the city. Runners will turn just before the Ovingdean roundabout and head west back into the city centre and all the way along to Hove Lagoon before turning round again and heading back to Madeira Drive where they finish.

All buses that are scheduled to pass through the Old Steine/St Peter’s Church area before 8.15am should do so as normal. From 8.15am, the A23 south of St Peter’s Church will be closed down to the Old Steine, as will the A259 from Hove Lagoon through to just before the Ovingdean roundabout. By 9.45am, St Peter’s Church to Old Steine will have reopened, however only buses and taxis will be allowed south of Edward Street into Old Steine. There will be a special blue light lane from Ovingdean to Roedean Road for coast road buses to use from 8.15am until approx 11.15am. Until approximately 11.15am, all coast road buses will also use Eastern Road and Roedean Road in both directions.

Service 1/1A – from 8.15am until 9.45am, eastbound buses from Churchill Square will operate via Queens Road, Terminus Road, Seven Dials, New England Road, Viaduct Road, Ditchling Road, Union Road, Elm Grove and Queens Park Road to Eastern Road. Buses operating westbound from Park Street will operate via Queens Park Road, Elm Grove, Lewes Road, St Peter’s Place, Cheapside, Fleet Street, New England Road, Seven Dials, Terminus Road and Queens Road to Churchill Square and then as normal.

Service 2 – as per instructions for service 1/1A.

Service 5/5A/5B – from 8.15am until 9.45am, eastbound buses from Churchill Square will operate via Queens Road, Terminus Road, Seven Dials and New England Road, then turning left into Preston Road at Preston Circus and normal route. Westbound buses from London Road shops will operate via Cheapside, Fleet Street, New England Road, Seven Dials, Terminus Road and Queens Road to Churchill Square.

Service 6 – as normal throughout.

Service 7 – between 8.15am and 9.45am, eastbound buses from Brighton Station will loop from Brighton Station and operate via Queens Road and Imperial Arcade (stopping opposite Pizza Hut not outside Boots) and run via Dyke Road, then Seven Dials, New England Road, Viaduct Road, Ditchling Road, Union Road, Elm Grove and Queens Park Road to Eastern Road. Westbound buses operate via the same in reverse to the bottom of Elm Grove, then Lewes Road, St Peter’s Place, Cheapside, Fleet Street, New England Road, Seven Dials, Dyke Road, Clock Tower, Queens Road, then normal to continue to George Street.

Service 12/12A/13X – Eastbound services commencing from Brighton Station between 8.15am and 9am will operate via Queens Road, Dyke Road/Imperial Arcade, Seven Dials, New England Road, Viaduct Road, Ditchling Road, Union Road, Elm Grove and Queens Park Road to Eastern Road. Then along Eastern Road to Arundel Road and Roedean Road and then wait at the entry to the blue light zone before proceeding. The departures from Churchill Square at 9.10am, 9.25am and 9.40am should instead commence from Brighton Station stop D and operate via the above route (serving the Imperial Arcade stop opposite Pizza Hut) and not serve Churchill Square. Westbound buses from 8.15am until 9.45am will use the blue light zone from Ovingdean to Roedean Road, Eastern Road, then via Queens Park Road, Elm Grove, Lewes Road, St Peter’s Place, Cheapside, Fleet Street, New England Road, Seven Dials and Terminus Road to Brighton Station and Churchill Square. From 9.45am until approximately 11.15am, eastbound buses will operate normally from Churchill Square to Old Steine, then via St James’s Street, Rock Gardens, Eastern Road and Roedean Road to the blue light lane on the A259. Westbound services from Ovingdean should operate via the blue light lane, Roedean Road, Eastern Road and Edward Street to Old Steine and Churchill Square. From 11.15am, the A259 should re-open east of the Aquarium roundabout and all services along the coast road should return to normal. If in the event the section of the A259 between Old Steine and Rock Gardens should remain closed beyond 11.15am, buses should operate via Rock Gardens and Edward Street to Old Steine westbound and via St James’s Street and Rock Gardens eastbound.

Service 14/14B/14C – from 8.15am to 9.45am, buses heading westbound from Ovingdean should operate via the blue light lane, Roedean Road, Eastern Road, then via Queens Park Road, Elm Grove, Lewes Road, St Peter’s Place, Cheapside, Fleet Street, New England Road, Seven Dials and Terminus Road to Brighton Station. Eastbound journeys should operate as per instructions for service 7 from Brighton Station to Eastern Road and then via Roedean Road and the blue light lane. From 9.45am until 11.15am, westbound buses should from Ovingdean operate via the blue light lane, Roedean Road, Eastern Road, and Edward Street to Old Steine and normal route. Eastbound buses should from Old Steine operate via St James’s Street to Rock Gardens rather than the seafront. From 11.15am, buses should operate normally throughout, however if the A259 between Old Steine and Rock Gardens remains closed, eastbound buses should operate via St James’s Street instead.

Service 18 - from 8.15am until 9.45am, eastbound buses from Brighton Station will operate via Terminus Road, Seven Dials, New England Road, Viaduct Road, Ditchling Road, Union Road, Elm Grove and Queens Park Road to Down Terrace. Buses operating westbound from Queens Park will use Queens Park Road, Elm Grove, Lewes Road, St Peter’s Place, Cheapside, Fleet Street, New England Road, Seven Dials, Terminus Road and Queens Road to Brighton Station.

Service 21/21A - westbound journeys between 8.15am and 9.45am from London Road shops will go via Cheapside, Fleet Street, New England Road, Seven Dials, Terminus Road and Queens Road to Churchill Square/Imperial Arcade. Eastbound journeys will operate from Churchill Square via Queens Road, Terminus Road, Seven Dials, New England Road to Preston Circus, then right into London Road, left into Oxford Street and normal route.

Service 22 – as per service 21/21A above.

Service 23 – as normal throughout.

Service 24 – as per service 21/21A above.

Service 25 – from 8.15am to 9.45am, journeys towards Churchill Square/Palmeira Square will from St Peter’s Place operate directly across into Cheapside, Fleet Street, then New England Road, Seven Dials, Terminus Road and Queens Road to Churchill Square/Palmeira Square. Outbound journeys should operate from Churchill Square via Queens Road, Terminus Road, Seven Dials, New England Road, Viaduct Road, Ditchling Road, Union Road, then left into Lewes Road and normal route. Standard double-deckers should be used on this route for any buses running out of the garage pre-1000.

Service 26/46 – as per service 21/21A above.

Service 27 – from 8.15am to 9.45am, westbound buses should operate from Ovingdean roundabout via the blue light lane, Roedean Road, Marina, back to Roedean Road, Eastern Road, Queens Park Road, Elm Grove, Lewes Road, St Peter’s Place, Cheapside, Fleet Street, New England Road, Seven Dials, and Dyke Road to the Clock Tower and then normal route by turning left into Queens Road to continue to Westdene. Eastbound buses should operate via instructions for the 7 route from Brighton Station to Queens Park Road, Eastern Road, Marina and Roedean Road, then via the blue light lane to Ovingdean roundabout. From 9.45am until approximately 11.15am, eastbound buses from Old Steine should operate via St James’s Street, Rock Gardens and Eastern Road to the Marina, then via the blue light lane to Ovingdean roundabout. Westbound buses from Ovingdean Gap should operate via Roedean Road, Marina, Eastern Road and Edward Street to Old Steine. The full route should return to normal from 11.15am but if for any reason the A259 between Old Steine and Rock Gardens should still be closed, please operate eastbound via St James’s Street and Rock Gardens and westbound via Rock Gardens and Edward Street.

Service 28/29 – as per instructions for service 25.

Service 48/49 – from 8.15am to 9.45am, westbound buses from London Road shops will operate via Cheapside, Fleet Street, New England Road, Seven Dials, Terminus Road and Queens Road to Churchill Square and normal route. Eastbound buses should operate from Churchill Square via Queens Road, Terminus Road and New England Road to Preston Circus, then right into London Road and left into Oxford Street, then as normal.

Service 50 – from 8.15am to 9.45am, buses towards Imperial Arcade will from London Road shops operate via Cheapside, Fleet Street, New England Road, Seven Dials, Dyke Road, Clock Tower and Queens Road to the North Road stand. The 0837 and 0924 journey from Churchill Square should operate via Queens Road, Terminus Road, Seven Dials, New England Road, right into London Road at Preston Circus, then left into Oxford Street and normal route.

Service 77 – the 9am from Brighton Pier will instead start from Churchill Square. The 10.15am, 11.30am and 12.45pm departures will start from Old Steine stop U, and loop via Imperial Arcade, Regent Hill and Churchill Square before going up Queens Road. The first bus to operate normally from the Pier will be at 2pm.
